Emmie started curating and showing work in Oxford and London with a first solo show in 2005 in an abandoned church. She graduated from an art degree at the design school of Nottingham Trent University in 2006. Since then her pieces have appeared in a number of books and publications.
She says her work “Aims to capture the vibrancy, chaos and beauty of distant cultures. It examines bygone cultures and the memories and details left by people who’s presence or part of their character maybe still ingrained in the interior and exterior of buildings.”
Magic realism is an integral part of her paintings. These are formed not only through the use of paint but often intricately layering paper, coffee, gold leaf, parts of circuit boards, spices, lego and other unusual materials collected during her travels. She works from a studio in Bristol in between art residencies and sketching from life. Emmie travels extensively. She has worked from the Himalayas exploring and documenting remote Tibetan villages, from a cave in Cappadocia and from a beautiful crumbling building in Havana. From 2017, she has partly been living and working from a sail boat.
Quantum exhibited Emmie’s work for the first time at the Affordable Art Fair in Battersea Park in 2011. Since then we have taken her work, to great acclaim, to Art Singapore, AAF Hong Kong, Stockholm AFF, New York art fair, Art Hamptons, Art Toronto and Art Palm Beach.
