Shropshire based artist, Natalie Toplass joined Quantum in 2017. We have exhibited her work at the Affordable Art Fairs in Battersea Park and Hampstead Heath. Natalie works primarily in oils and is well known for her meticulous detail, vibrant colours and strong contemporary style. Her work is often large in scale and full of drama and vitality. Natalie cites her influences as Georgia O’Keefe, Karl Blossfeldt and early 17th century Dutch painters such as Ambrosius Bosschaert, drawing inspiration from their use of colour and form. Natalie says of her work: “Over the years painting flowers and birds has developed from an interest into a passion. I wanted to experiment with working on a larger scale whilst still capturing detail, character and fragility. For myself, the larger scale creates a feeling of being encompassed in pure colour and sensuous shapes, some of which are often passed over if viewed on a smaller scale. I allow the subject itself to direct which value I focus on. For example, sometimes only colour will reflect the impact and dynamism of the subject, other times contrasts between light and shade are so intense that the brief moment in nature has to be studied and captured in full”.
