Mathilda Mai is a self-taught painter born in the South of France, whose work explores the natural world through dreamlike compositions of figures, animals, flora and celestial imagery. Her early life in the countryside has deeply shaped her relationship with nature, colour and storytelling. Coming from a long line of female artists, Mathilda has been surrounded by art and inspiration throughout her whole life. She works through layers of paint to create rich textures and expressive mark making. Drawing on folk traditions and the fantastical, her paintings balance playfulness with contemplation, creating imagined worlds imbued with wonder and nostalgia.
